Two questions we get asked a lot is do we shoot film at weddings? and why do we shoot film?
As part of our wedding package we offer to shoot some rolls of film should the bride and groom-to-be want to. Several of our couples love the idea of shooting on film and the beautiful results it gives.
Why do we like to shoot film? We love the process. Digital is amazing. We would not work without digital cameras, they are great, allow instant feedback and work in lighting that you can never match with film. The images can be processed several ways and they look beautiful, especially using the equipment we do. But in the same way that we love unlimited music our iPhones, there is something very special about sitting down and listening to a vinyl record, something you can’t replicate with an iPhone full of music. This is how we feel about film.
The main benefit of shooting a roll of film is that it slows us down. This may seem like a bad thing, when we can rattle off unlimited shots on a digital camera, why slow down? Well, the simple answer is it helps us to think more. Suddenly being reduced to 36 exposures of a film roll means you cannot snap away. You need to carefully think and frame every shot. By shooting this way, we find that it helps us create better work no matter what camera we are shooting with.
We get to take a deep breath, think, plan and create. Much in the same way that we always encourage brides to plan a few minutes into their day to take things in, shooting with film allows us to take a breath and focus (how very Zen). By doing this, when we step back to digital, we naturally take the techniques with us. It simply makes us better photographers.
We also love the look of film. You would think that in the days of Photoshop that it was easy to recreate the look of film. I will admit, you can get close, but there is something that makes a film photograph that cannot be replicated. Maybe it’s the imperfections, the visual equivalent of a crackle on vinyl perhaps, but we feel an analogue image is a thing of beauty.
Maybe your love for Kodak Portra is as big as ours, or maybe you just love the look of these images. If beautiful film photography is something you want at your wedding, get in touch and let us create some beautiful film based memories on your special day.
