Welcome to our first photo tip Tuesday. Here at 166, we don't want to simply take beautiful photographs of you, we want to teach you how to take better photographs.
We thought we'd start with the best piece of advice we ever got. The best camera for taking your photo is the one that you have with you. What do we mean by this? Well, sometimes you will go out or to an event with the intention of taking photos. This means you have your camera with you, that you are able to take "proper" photos. What happens though if you don't have your camera, you simply forgot it? Well the camera that is with you is generally your mobile phone. Believe it or not, the average camera on new smart phones delivers images as good as a DSLR of 10 years ago.
When in the right hands, a phone camera will take amazing images. Make sure you are using yours.
One of the most annoying things that all professional photographers hear is "Your camera takes great photos" which obviously, they do, but would you say to a chef "Wow, your oven cooks amazing meals"? I just want to you to be aware that technique trumps gear every time. Learn composition techniques, learn how to use and control light (we'll tell you both in upcoming Tip Tuesdays) and it won't matter what camera you have in your hand, your photographs will improve.
